Debating Win
The Coláiste Iognáid debating society started the new school year in style on Saturday with a decisive win against 80 school teams in the prestigious All-Ireland Belvedere College Mace competition. Third Year ‘Jes’ debaters Eoghan Finn and Daragh McCarthy beat pupils from around the country in the day-long test of persuasion, logic and wit.
Winning their five debates, where motions ranged from allowing prisoners the right to vote, to banning the teaching of religion in school, the pair won the final proposing that the ‘Developing World be left to their own devices’. They were awarded their championship title by the chairperson, RTÉ’s Brian Dobson.
The Galway School was well represented in the competition with debaters Frank O’Neill, Cian Hamilton, Eoin O’Cianna, Jack Counihan, Amy De Burca and Abigail Silke also being placed high in the final results.
